La Famille Express

The La Famille Express is one of the most recognizable shipwrecks in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Built in 1952, this Soviet-made cargo ship ran aground on the Caicos Banks in 2004 after its tow line snapped during a journey from the Dominican Republic to a scrapyard in India. The vessel drifted onto the shallow banks south of Providenciales, where it has remained ever since. Over the years, wind, waves, and salt have slowly worn the ship away, turning it into a striking landmark and a reminder of the region’s maritime history.
